NATIONAL CRIME RECORDS BUREAU

NCRB stands for National Crime Records Bureau. It is a government agency responsible for maintaining the crime and criminal records of the nation. It was established in the year 1986 under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It is headquartered at New Delhi. It acts as a repository of information regarding crime and criminals so that perpetrator can be linked to the crime.

It was set up on  the acceptance of recommendations of the National Police Commission(1977).Then, Ministry of Home Affairs constituted a task force in 1985 to prepare the roadmap for the formation of the National Crime Records Bureau. The formation of NCRB was done with an aim to empower Indian Police with Information Technology and criminal Intelligence to enable them to uphold law and protect people. It also acts as a national repository of fingerprints of all criminals.

Objectives of NCRB-

  • to act as a store house of information on crime and criminals of national and international level both so that the criminals can be linked to crime.
  • for collection, coordination and exchange of information among inter state police and international police organizations.
  • to prepare crime statistics on national level.
  • to assist and coordinate the working of state national crime records bureau.
  • development of computer based systems for Central Police Organizations and providing the facilities for computerization for their data processing and training needs.
  •  collection of fingerprints of all convicted criminals.
  • to advice the Central and State Governments on matters relating to fingerprints and footprints, organizing training programs for fingerprint experts.

National Crime Records Bureau is presently functioning through the following branches:

(i) Crime Records Branch

(ii) Central Finger Print Bureau

(iii) Statistical Branch

(iv) Systems Development Wing

(v) State Implementation Branch

(vi) System Maintenance Branch

(vii) Training Branch

(viii) Data Center and Technical Branch

Crime in India Report, 2020-

A total of 29,193 cases of murder were registered in the year 2020. According to statistics a total of 3,71,503 cases of crime against women were registered in the year 2020.  Cyber crime has considerably increased over the years. A total of 50,035 cases of cyber crime was registered in 2020, among these around 60% of cases were for the motive of fraud.
